Plastic Memories

The "otaku girls" role-playing game takes place "a little bit in the future in 20XX." Akihabara, which was once called "the otaku holy land," is now in decline after otaku culture itself has declined. Players take on the role of a manager of one of the few remaining "otaku shops." The manager helps to "raise" various talented otaku girls, and together, players and the girls battle a "virus" that is infecting the world of various works, while also retrieving people's lost "memories."

Time flies by; Hiroyuki and Akari are 12th-graders now. Both of them and their friends have grown up gradually in someway, physically or mentally, but one of their best friends is missing: the lifelike android Multi. To their surprise, Multi is brought to their campus again without notice, yet she is no longer the same Multi they have known.

In the near future, technology has made a few leaps and bounds, and videophones and constant wireless internet access are available to everyone. However, it would seem that the government has been careless and a skilled hacker was able to break into the national information archive. Using the data held there he creates the Platonic Chain website for people to discover information about themselves and their friends. Words start to spread quickly that there is a site that enables you to look up anything. Coincidentally, three young girls, Hitomi, Rika, and Kanae, are able to access the site. Note: The DVD version of Episode 16 was released with some minor variations compared to the regular TV broadcast

In the future, personal computers have developed into "Persocoms", mobile computers that look like human beings. Hideki Motosuwa, a prep school student, desperately wants to buy a Persocom but cannot afford to. One day he finds a Persocom that has been thrown away and decides to keep it. When he turns on the Persocom, all she can say is "Chii" so he decides to name her that. After a while it starts to become apparent that Chii is more than an average Persocom. Having much better performance, it seems that Chii might be a "Chobit", a type of advanced Persocom rumored to have independent thought.
